PNG preserves pixel data losslessly with transparency support, which typically yields larger files. JPG drops high-frequency chroma values to achieve high compression rates. Transcoding extracts the pixels, flattens alpha layers against a white background, and encodes them to a JPEG stream.

Why did my transparent background turn white?

JPG does not support transparency layers. Any transparent pixels must be flattened against a solid backdrop, which defaults to white.
